Q + A with James Tull

Sep 8th, 2010

Self Portrait

James Tull is a rare bread of artist, photographer, and human. Let’s just say that everything he touches turns to gold, or something like that. We have been lucky enough to work with him and include him in the first run of our Limited Edition Prints.

We were able to track James down via our unreliable iPhone during a misty night in Northern San Diego to get this exclusive interview.

Ring Ring…is this James Rico Tull?

Yes.

That’s good to hear. So how’s your night going?

Good.

How did you get such a sweet middle name? We bet all the ladies love it…

I got it cause I’m part Mexican, but no one ever believes me cause I’m so white.

I see, well a little birdie told us that you were gathering up all your players for a fantasy football draft tonight?

I was and I just accidentally picked someone that spends most of his time on the bench because I thought he had a cool name. But I was able to get San Diego’s number one quarter back!

We hope that you come out on top at the end of the season so that you can buy us a few beers! So, we heard that you like to take random photos of people in awkward situations, is that true?

No.

In all truth, we have actually heard and seen that you are an amazing photographer. How long have you been shooting photos?

I’ve been shooting photos for 14 years.

What’s your favorite thing to shoot?

Water.

We kind of figured you’d say that. We also heard that you’re pretty handy with a pencil. How long have you been putting pencil to paper?

24 Years.

Where do you find inspiration for your photography and art?

The internet, magazines, outside, and music.

What artists and photographers do you admire?

D Humphrey, Thomas Cambell, Marc Van Dalen, Rich Jacobs, Parra, Sanna Annukka, Lisa Solberg, Steven Harrington, Ash Thorp, Steve Sherman, Kai Neville, and E Warner.

How did you get involved with We Love Creativity?

Got bullied into it.

Is there a story behind your Limited Edition Print, Faces?

There really is no story. I took a photo with my iPhone of a sketch I did while in El Salvador and added some Spanish to it.

Anything else you’d like the world to know besides the fact that you once had a fro and drove an electric blue Civic Si?

It was periwinkle…not electric blue.

Have a good night and fun counting sheep while you lay in bed.
